On March 10th, the day before Tom Hanks announced that he had
tested positive for covid-19, I drove my three-year-old
daughter to her day care in Berkeley, California. The drive took
us up College Avenue, where white-haired professors huddled at
sidewalk café tables; we passed the fraternity houses where
students gathered on the lawns. Just a few blocks from my
daughter’s school, there’s a coffee shop with a clientele split
equally between students and senior citizens.
