Medical Respite for the Homeless in Monterey County

Hospital Council, participating hospitals, the shelter provider, elected officials, and community leaders celebrated the opening of the first Medical Respite Center (MRC) in Monterey County on May 24, 2016. The MRC is a public/private partnership between Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, Natividad Medical Center, Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System, Community Homeless Solutions, and Hospital Council.

Community Homeless Solutions will operate the program in a three bedroom home in Seaside, housing up to 6 clients at a time. A social worker and case manager will work with the clients by connecting them to needed medical and social services in hopes to achieve better health outcomes and start their journey toward housing stability and self-sufficiency.

The Open House and Ribbon Cutting event included hospital leaders from the three hospitals, Community Homeless Solutions and its board of directors, and Monterey County Board of Supervisors Chair Jane Parker.

The MRC was a three year project which included developing a needs assessment and financial feasibility study, identifying a service provider and program location, defining the scope of the program, and creating MOUs between the participating entities.

For 2020-2021, Community Homeless Solutions continues as the service provider with Montage Health and Natividad participating in the program.
