COVID Peaking in Shasta County: Why Now and What Does it Mean?

As colder weather creeps into California, many of the state’s largest counties are headed into winter with new COVID cases on the decline. Los Angeles, San Francisco and Sacramento counties hit peaks in July and have been sloping downward since.

Meanwhile, in Shasta County, the infection is hitting new heights. The Northern California county with about 180,000 residents has the highest new case rate and test positivity rate of any in the state. More people here have tested positive for the virus since the start of September than the rest of the pandemic combined. (
